Why does the power system in the US have interconnects? Why isn't it all just connected as one gigantic grid?

This is beyond my expertise, but I'll take a shot at it. I'm guessing its for safety and the difficulties of a syncronous power grid. The best example is the New York power loss that happened a few years ago. The interconnections helped prevent the spread of that overdamped power wave which was shutting of substations all across the Eastern United States.
