You know those automated power meters that are replacing the dial ones next to your house? Well, they aren't just for show and to save the meter man from coming by. Each one of those power meters (if they connected via a wireless network) can monitor your power supply. By sending this data through their SCADA system, the power company has a better view of which areas in their grid needs trouble shooting. Who knows, later on, the power company can also control transmission and generating stations via those supplies by diverting and producing more or less power depending on how much electricity your house is using.
